It would seem to be straightforward that our own health & fitness is one of our key concerns in our existence (if not the most important then certainly right up there). One might argue that the health of a loved one is more important, however how can you provide, care for, love, enjoy the company of, or be any use to that person if you are ill, dependent, incapacitated or otherwise not in optimal condition?

I have clients who state point blank that their careers are more important than their health. I find this both astounding and frightening. What good is career success if you’re on the way to an early grave?

I have other clients who refuse to eat the way I prescribe even knowing that I am offering a proven method and (almost) certain positive results. Again, I am flabbergasted.

Others want to train but can’t find time. (I don’t really think they want to train at all.)

Neglecting your own health and fitness for any reason is inexcusable. Careers and not more important that your health and fitness, neither are relationships, deadlines, movies, or any other excuse that you can come up with.

In much the same way that you cannot help the poor by attacking the rich; you cannot achieve success in your life without health and fitness (at least not in the long term).

  • All the things you mentioned I struggled with, but now that i’ve turned some of them around, and my career is taking a back seat to my health. I’m feeling happier, but now I have one eye on a new career.

  • I think for many people who have let a long period of time pass may find it hard to get the fitness ball (boulder) rolling. I found it hard. Last year I thought I didn’t have time between university and work for a serious fitness regime. After getting the ball rolling over the holidays I now find I have more energy, more concentration and more time do get things done. I’m generally pretty happy most of the time and don’t get stressed as much even though my work load is now heavier than last year. If people careers are important to them then a good solid fitness routine will most likely have a positive impact on them. They just need to start things off.

  • As someone who had a long and some would say succesful career working around the world I can honestly that I was miserable and a physical wreck.

Most of us confuse what is important in our lives by endlessly seeking financial gain as some sort justification of our existence and are driven by our ego for some sort of recognition from our peers.

I have lost a few close people including my father where they viewed their health as something that was always there, until one day it wasnt. None of us are immortal and recognition of that fact should be conscious in all our thoughts and that your health cannot be bought only given away.

  • That’s why it’s up to those who are gaining the benefits from a healthy fitness focus to do their best to introduce others to it too. CrossFit isn’t for everyone so I try my best not to push it but I gently persuade wherever I can as for those that I’ve introduced, most of them have come back for more and, like Cam said, it has had a positive impact on them.

  • Couldn’t agree more Adam. Its as scary as it is astounding.

Since when did our bodies simply become a means of transportation for our head and brain?

This sort of imbalance in people’s priorities is very common.

    Without health you have nothing.

Health and fitness is a personal responsibility. If its not #1 on your list, have a re-think.

There’s not much in life you can accomplish from a hospital bed.

  • Being physical and striving to be fit and healthy seems foreign to some as it’s not an expected priority in society, it’s left to those who are deemed exceptional (olympians, national teams, professional sportspeople). We have lost our natural instincts and have become somewhat domesticated in our pursuit of success. Instead of hunting prey to provide for a family, we sit in boxes for hours on end, or stand on our feet hawking other peoples wares, losing our sanity and physical condition along the way.

Health is a ballast for all the important things in our lives. If it makes us resemble a human just that little bit more in mentality and physicality, then it should be a priority for everyone.
