So true Adam. I admire anyone who has the plums to do it. And they all would have a story for sure. My father has a million!

There's an eastern saying that says just this in other words...

“Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.”

You know, I didn't and usually don't sit back and ponder on what I have learned on years past but I can give a couple of insights into some things I have learned here in Thailand while my mind has been beautifully unburdened.

1. The worst thing that you can have in your heart is fear. People with good hearts will sense your fear and back away, people with bad hearts will sense it and see an opportunity. If ever you wanted your life to be the opposite of everything that you hoped it would be, then being afraid is the straight line to making that happen.

2. The world is a mirror. When you feel bitter, indifferent, uncompassionate, you will see this all around you. When you feel free, unburdened, happy, beauty will pop up everywhere.

... just a couple for now.

Um, sorry to disappoint you Keith but the prayer Jesus prayed was "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done" (Luke 22:42). Like you say, it would be perfectly reasonable for Jesus to not want to go through with what was to follow (he was human) and he's admitting this out loud, but his desire is that God's will would be done, not his. If he didn't say the last line, yeah that would be a tap out.

I believe these tshirts to be theologically flawed and misleading. The agony in the garden is a well known passage in the bible which sees Jesus, scared by his impending crucifixion, pleading with God to "Take this cup of suffering away from me" in short "I give up I don't want to die". A perfectly reasonable and understandable plea in my opinion however I believe that it constitutes a tap.

Keith, you may be correct about Dawkins's writing however, I wonder if he removed some of the scientific complexity to allow for a more readable text. Also, it is true that there have been some amazing scientific 'injustices' as you term them. I would however argue that there have been many greater benefits to society through science than religion and many more deaths, wars and injustices caused by religion than science.

Hitchens's book is fantastic. As is "The Atheist Manifesto" by Michel Onfray.

I will look for Eagleton's critique.

Thank you for your input.

An interesting man for sure but not a great writer in my opinion. He is far too quick to gloss over the terrible injustices that science has brought on us in his relentless pursuit of religion. See Terry Eagleton's (also an atheist) savage critique of the God Delusion, its fantastic. If you enjoyed Dawkins book Adam you might want to read Christopher Hitchen's book 'God is not Great', he has a great way with words and a very interesting viewpoint.

Adam--
Just stopped by your blog, linked from your weekly fitness feed.
People that can think clearly are in short supply these days.
Those that take the time to read, study, & think will always make an impact on their culture.
I believe that it is a good practice to read & learn from numerous and varied sources of information, cultures, & world-views.
One thing I have found beneficial is to read views that are different from my own.
I appreciate your open & honest approach.
